Air China (CA) Boeing 737 First Class In-Flight: PVG - PEK 12/2008

At the end of our stay in Shanghai, we wanted to make a quick stop in Vancouver before heading back to San Francisco. Since Air China does not have a non-stop flight from Shanghai to Vancouver, we had to make a domestic connection from Shanghai to Beijing in order to connect with the non-stop from Beijing to Vancouver.

This domestic flight is served by a Boeing 737-800, and the plane is configured in two class of service. I was fortunate to be ticketed in First Class for this segment.

The Boeing 737-800 is similar to this model on the counter of the domestic Air China lounge in Shanghai, although my plane is not likely to have the Olympics livery.
My flight is CA985, the same flight number used for the non-stop from Beijing to San Francisco. If we were booked on the flight to San Francisco, we would have an international connection in Beijing. Instead, I was informed by the check-in staff in Shanghai that I need to claim my luggage at the domestic carousel in Beijing, re-check in at the International terminal, and also re-check my luggage.

With my connection time of about an hour and 45 minutes, I should be okay if everything goes smoothly.

Air China CA 985 is scheduled from Shanghai-Beijing-San Francisco, and is code shared with other Star Alliance airlines.
The fight is also coded as United Airlines' UA 4453. There appears to be a number of American passengers ticketed on UA, and did not find out that their flight is operated by Air China until they check in earlier this morning.
First class on this Boeing 737-800 has two rows of 2-2 seating. The bulk-head row has bassinet attachments and has about as much space as US domestic first class seats at about 38-40 inches pitch.
This flight is only half full in first class, so each of the four passengers has two seats to spread out.
The second row seats are equipped with fold-down foot rests.
A welcome surprise, the aircraft is equipped with overhead vents. Many airlines eliminate overhead air vents, and often keep uncomfortable warm cabin temperature, having the individual air vents is a real benefit when that happens.
Overhead bin over row one is used for equipments.
No AVOD (Audio Video On Demand) equipment is installed, but there are flip-down overhead LCD screens throughout aircraft.
Flip-out drink trays are installed in the center arm-rests
